With consistent waves year-round, Carolina Beach is the perfect destination for surfers of all skill levels, whether you're a beginner eager to catch your first wave or an experienced surfer looking for a new location or to improve your skills. Read on for all things surfing in Carolina Beach.
Local Surf Spots
Several locations near public beach access points in Carolina Beach serve as ideal surf spots, shaped by shifting sandbars and seasonal swells. On the shoreline near the Carolina Beach Boardwalk, accessible by the Harper Access, surfers can catch fun, rolling waves – though this spot can get crowded, especially in the summer months. Just a short walk south, Hamlet Avenue Beach Access provides a slightly quieter alternative, while still offering easy entry to the surf.
For those looking for a more consistent break, the area near the Carolina Beach Pier and the Salt Marsh Access on the island's northern end typically produces solid waves; the pier helps shape the waves, creating clean right and left swells. However, surfers should always keep a safe distance, as surfing is not allowed within 500 feet of the pier.
Shifting sandbars along the unspoiled coastline of Freeman Park create long, rolling waves when conditions align. This spot is also a great option for surfers looking to escape the crowds. Visitors with four-wheel-drive vehicles can drive directly onto the beach from the park's public access point by purchasing a daily access pass at the on-site pay station.
Before paddling out, check the Carolina Beach webcam for a real-time look at conditions on the northern end.
